Conflict

Person vs. Person:
Katniss is forced to fight opponents in the arena.
Person vs. Self:
Katniss has to decide if she wants to collect supplies or hide as instructed. Even though this is a minor example, it's an example non-the-less.
Person vs. Nature:
Katniss battles nature when she becomes dehydrated while she tries to find water in the arena.

Setting

This story is set in District 12 at the beginning. District 12 is run down, dirty and depressing. About halfway into the story, the setting changes to the forest of the Hunger Games. The forest is just like any other forest, there is trees and water. This forest is rigged with traps set by the gamemakers, that are supposed to make the game more interesting. On the other half of the arena is a huge wheat field, filled with snakes and mice.

Good Guy vs. Bad Guy

This story has one clear protagonist, Katniss, who has one clear goal, stay alive. The antagonist in this story is not as clear cut. There are so many things trying to stop her from achieving her goal, that it is hard to narrow it down to just one. At the start she battles dehydration, which is person vs. nature. Later, she is taken by government and has to compete in the Hunger Games, the government is another antagonist. Once she is in the arena she has to fight other people, which is a person vs. person. Katniss has long brown hair and is very well built. She is also stubborn and determined.

Summary

This book has a very good Exposition. It sets the story up very well. The Inciting Incident is a very shocking one is this story. It is defiantly the moment when Katniss’ sister’s name, Prim, is called at the Reaping. Katniss then volunteers to take her sisters place, and the action only goes up-hill from there. She is shipped off to the Hunger Games along with her partner, Peeta. Upon arrival, the ‘tributes’ are treated like gold before the games begin. Once in the arena, there is no rules, it’s just be or be killed. The last person alive is the winner. Katniss undergoes many emotional episodes while in the arena and also teams up with a girl named Rue. The climax is when there are only two people left, Katniss and Peeta, who have fallen for each other. Since there can only be one winner, they both threaten to eat poisonous berries. The rules are instantly changed and the two are both declared winner.

Genre

The Hunger Games can fall into many categories of genre. There is Action, Humor and even Romance. But the major category that can describe this book is Science Fiction. I think this is the correct choice because the story is set in the future. They have many new devices and the world in run entirely different. They also talk about our era as history, which is another clue that points towards Science Fiction. It is kind of a twisted Science Fiction, as there isn’t any robots or thing that you normally expect from Science Fiction.
